Barack Obama: World Views

By: K. Mulvihill

For the past couple of years, the United States has struggled through many hardships including 9/11, the War in Iraq, and the country's economic down fall. As the 2008 election began to surface, there were definite signs that the citizens of the U.S. were looking for a change. Now, after the election, the U.S. citizens are headed for just that, a change. For the first time in American history, the U.S. has elected an African American president. Barack Obama has been sworn in and is now the president of the United States of America.
It has only been a little over forty years since Martin Luther King Jr. lead the Civil Rights Movement in an effort to end segregation and gain the same rights for blacks as all other citizen. This election shows that the vision of Martin Luther King Jr is becoming a reality. The U.S. is ready for change and to move forward. Countries such as Brazil, Kenya, France, the Czech Republic, Spain, South Africa, Britain, and many others welcomed Obama’s win. The leaders of these countries see Obama as a source of hope for a better future. Many world leaders believe the U.S. foreign policy could change for the better which would help stabilize the world’s economy. Many feel that Barack Obama stands for a new generation where anything seems possible and where hope has been restored.

My Trip to the Capitol
By:K. Mulvihill

Over Christmas vacation, I visited Washington D.C. and had the chance to explore the great museums and monuments. It was my first time ever visiting and I looked like the typical tourist, with my map in one hand and my camera in the other.
I took the metro in to D.C. and the moment I stepped onto the streets, I was amazed. To my right was 14th street where the Holocaust museum is located, to my left was the Museum of Natural History, in front of me was the gorgeous Smithsonian Castle, in back of me was the Washington Monument, and just beyond that was the Lincoln Memorial. As I began walking toward the Museum of Natural History, I looked up and saw this huge, white building with a domed shape roof and I realized it was the U.S. capitol building. It was much larger then I expected and it gave off a sense of authority because of the way it emerged from beyond the tree tops and overlooked that part of the capitol.
The experience of visiting all the great monuments of the United States capital was amazing and it was crazy to think that in less than a month Barack Obama would be sworn in as President of the U.S. in that very area. I recommend visiting Washington D.C. at least once in your life time.
